How To Extend Your Home...

Adding an extension to your home can seem quite complicated, once you have decided what part of the house you would like to extend, whether it be single story, double storey, loft conversion or in certain cases adding a room to the whole underneath of your property, the process is all the same. Of course you can employ a builder to take care of all this for you, but if you want to keep costs down, then you can go through this process yourself. The simplist way of doing this is to post a job under the catergory 'Architectural Services' on My Builder . It is free to do this and you can read reviews from people that have used the services of the Architect in the past,  they will take care of planning issues, applications and drawings if you need them.

This can save you money without needing the builder do this for you, and you very well could find yourself saving a couple of thousand pounds straight from the start.

 A Builder Or DIY

Employing the services of a builder is one of the hardest things to do if you do not know any, I'm not going to go into too much detail here as there are various ways in which to find one, maybe friends or family can recommend one to you, or maybe you could just phone a few and get them around to quote.

Another way to do this and potentially save thousands of pounds is to employ the trades directly using My Builder, again and read the reviews. On an extension you'll be looking for the groundworkers first, they will be dealing with the excavation of the footings, drainage and concreteing works, after this you will beed a bricklayer to build the structure, then a carpenter to form the roof, finally a roof tiler to give you the shell of a building. After this you'll need a plasterer, plumber and electrician, then a decorator at the very end.

But before any of the above, make a rough plan of what you would like to do, make a list of everything you would like to house in your new extension and make sure all the measurements work first, once the extension is built it can be quite disheartening to find the bed doesn't fit, or the dining table is 50mm to long and you end up sawing the end off the bed to fit it in!
